  • Forts & Palaces

Four Seasons Vacations believes in customising your travel.

India was once home to 565 princely states and these Maharajas were known to have massive forts, magnificent palaces and stately homes (called Havelis). After the country became a republic some of these opulent buildings were taken over by the government, while some still remained with the ruling family. Some of these palaces and havelis were converted into heritage hotels,  while some became a place for sightseeing. Most are well preserved and even today a visitor is awe truck and dumbfounded with their opulence, magnificent architecture and the interiors. Huge crystal chandeliers adorn many of the palaces some of which are at the Jai Vilas Palace, However the largest collection of large venetian chandeliers are at the Falaknuma Palace numbering a staggering 40!

India also boasts of some the most impregnable forts with such majestic ones such as the Mehrangarh at Jodhpur, The Red Fort at Delhi, historic forts of Gwalior, Chittaurgarh and Golconda and of course the romantic fort at Amer in Jaipur. Any number of books have tried to capture this great legacy in words as well as pictures, but nothing can match being there to feel the sheer size of some of these places. This unique segment of tourism can only be found in India. Come relive the opulence, palace intrigues and romance of history!
